Janelle Barrera

At home on stage, the teaching studio, or the conductor’s podium, Janelle Janovich-Barrera brings a myriad of skills to the flute. She has been an active private instructor, clinician, and freelance musician for the past 27 years. Ms. Janovich-Barrera has been a member of the Vienna Music Institute Staff since 2022. 

Janelle holds a BM in Flute Performance from California State University, Long Beach and a MM in Flute Performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington. She has studied Flute with Dr. John Barcellona, Thomas Robertello, Mark Sparks, Sarah Jackson, Cathy Ransom-Karoly and Jim Walker.

Ms. Janovich-Barrera has performed throughout the United States and internationally in Taiwan and Mexico. She has been led under the baton of conductors Zubin Mehta, Meli Mehta, David Zinman, Michael Stern, Alexander Trager, Sergiu Comissiona, and Maximiano Valdes. She has appeared as guest soloist with the Tacoma Youth Symphony, Tacoma Young Artists Orchestra, Everett Symphony Orchestra, Harbor Winds Ensemble, Bakersfield College Orchestra, and the Southern California Philharmonic.

Ms. Janovich-Barrera is a substitute flute with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and the Hawaii Symphony in Honolulu. She was recently featured on the nationally televised 2022 NFL Honors Awards Ceremony with the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles. 

As a highly sought after flute instructor and music educator, Janelle serves on the music faculty at Northwood High School (Irvine), University High School (Irvine), Warren High School (Downey), Savanna High School (Anaheim), Wilson Classical High School (Long Beach), and Jefferson Leadership Academy (Long Beach). On the collegiate level, Ms. Janovich-Barrera teaches online flute lessons for Solano Community College (Northern California) and Valley City State University in North Dakota. Janelle also assists with the Claremont McKenna College Symphony Orchestra flute sectionals and the prestigious Idyllwild Arts Academy Symphony Orchestra. 

Ms. Janovich-Barrera has been a guest artist at the Long Beach Flute Institute, Tacoma Youth Symphony Association’s Evergreen Music Festival, San Diego Flute Guild’s Flute Festival and Summer Camp, San Francisco Flute Society’s Flutes by the Sea Master Class, and Snowater Flute Camp in Seattle, WA. She is the current President of the Los Angeles Flute Guild and founder of the Los Angeles Flute Guild’s “Flüt Än-säm-bəl”, Southern California Flute Camp, the Peninsula Flute Camp (WA), and now the Vienna Music Institute Summer Flute Camp. 

Janelle is an active member of the National Flute Association where she has been invited to perform, conduct, and adjudicate various competitions at the annual NFA Flute Conventions. She has also been involved with the Music Teachers National Association and is a certified Music Teachers’ Association of California Certificate of Merit Instructor. Ms. Janovich-Barrera enjoys organizing student recitals and encourages her students to enter both local and national solo competitions. Her mission is to promote music education throughout the community and share her love and passion for the art of flute performance with all ages and abilities.

Originally hailing from the beautiful state of Washington, Ms. Janovich-Barrera currently makes her home in Cypress, CA with her wonderful son, 2 spoiled cats and adorable rescue puppy named Oliver.
